Literature Text

I should have known
what would happen.
Should have guessed
in that first faint blush
of morning in my soul -
should have surmised -
should not have been surprised -
read the writing on
the wall of shame...
not enough time has passed
to feel the emptiness -
not enough words exchanged
to know the truth of it all.
All-in-all, all of it
is pain in the heart
of darkness
where once a candle flickered,
kept me up at night -
warmth and longing
and good,good feelings
which I embraced in place of you.

I still hope
when hope is dashed.
I still love
while love is crashed
against the rocks of solitude
on your strange shore.
And only disappointment
appears on the horizon
to send me spiraling
like a lost bird in a storm
who once saw the sky
no more
the welcoming haven.
I should have known.
